What is PRP treatment for hair restoration?
PRP non-surgical hair restoration consists of application of your own Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) topically and by injection into the area of thinning hair to stimulate new hair growth and improve heath and texture of existing hair.
How does the PRP treatment work?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is used to stimulate and nourish follicles for hair growth. Highly concentrated plasma contains platelets that release growth factors; these growth factors have been shown to generate new hair and improve the density and health of your existing hair
How is the PRP inserted into scalp ?
Using dermaroller, mesogun or insulin syringe, microholes are created over the scalp and platelet rich plasma is instilled into the deeper layers of scalp which stimulate the existing hair follicles and promote the new hair growth.
Is there any discomfort and downtime with this treatment?
We use local anesthetic to make the treatment very comfortable. There is minimal tenderness and mild swelling in the injection sites for 3-5 days following the treatment.
Who is a better candidate for this therapy – Man or woman?
It is equally effective in both men and women and works best in patients with diffuse thinning and miniaturized hair.
Can PRP Therapy be combined with Hair Transplant?
Yes, it can be combined with hair transplant – pre-operatively, intra-operatively, or post-operatively. It not only helps in healthier and faster growth of transplanted hair, but also stimulates the existing thinning hair at the same time.
Is the treatment painful?
The pain is subjective and patient specific. Some people perceive it like hot massage and some find it unbearable. For sensitive individuals we suggest numbing gel or topical anaesthesia one hour prior to procedure which reduces the pain sensation considerably. Alternately nerve blocks can be given for better pain control.
How long does it take for a single treatment?
The entire treatment including preparation of your PRP in our office, cleaning of your treatment area, injection of the PRP into the scalp and Micropen treatment of scalp takes less than an hour for most patients.
What results should I expect from my PRP treatment?
PRP has been used as thinning hair treatment in male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss for over 10 years and recently is catching a lot of attention in cosmetic medicine due to its benefits.
PRP contains a rich and concentrated mix of cytokines and growth factors which can be activated and injected into the areas of thinning hair; leading to stimulation of dormant hair follicles and hair regeneration. It has been observed that, at the very least, PRP treatment improves hair health, strength, individual hair diameter and prevents further hair loss which can maintain the current number of hairs and improve the health and quality of your current hairs; and at best induce new hair growth the degree of which varies from person to person.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
PRP therapy can be repeated every 1-2 months and usually 3-4 sittings are sufficient, though some patients may require maintenance therapy once a year or more frequently depending upon the severity of hair loss. The visible results in form of new hair growth can be seen after 3-4 months of treatment and further improvement is noticed in the subsequent months.
The usual precaution is not to touch the scalp and no head-bath for 12 hours after the procedure.
Can other medical therapies be continued concurrently?
Absolutely, it can be used in conjunction with other topical and oral medications. In fact, we encourage it and prescribe PRP therapy as a compliment to a non-surgical approach for those patients who are not eligible for surgery or who want to delay hair restoration surgery. We recommend PRP therapy along with Minoxidil and DHT blockers or for those patients who cant tolerate or have side effects with these medications.
How soon will I see results from my PRP treatment?
Although you will start to see improvement in hair texture, thickness of hair shaft and growth of new hairs in the treated area within two weeks after treatment, it typically takes three to six months from your initial treatment to see measurable results.
Does PRP treatment need to be repeated for prevention of hair loss?
Unfortunately, the results of PRP treatment for hair regrowth are not permanent. Nothing can change your genetic predisposition for hair loss and hair loss will return if no maintenance type treatment is done. Most patients male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss who respond to PRP hair loss treatment, require repeat treatment anywhere between 12-24 months after their initial treatment. As with your initial treatment, it may take another three to six months to see measurable improvement in hair density. Subsequently, PRP may need to be repeated periodically depending on your individual response to PRP therapy, your genetics, the extent of your hair loss and if you are using any other adjunctive treatments with your PRP hair loss treatments such as topical minoxidil, oral propecia etc. Additional treatment frequency will also depend on your hair treatment goals.
What are the side effects of PRP treatment for thinning hair?
Because the PRP is obtained from you, it virtually eliminates the possibility of allergic reaction. Like with any treatment involving needle injections there mild bleeding, easily controlled with application of pressure
